I envy my fellow country men in Malaysia - they can watch the 2006 World Cup for FREE back in Malaysia. Here in the UAE, the cost of watching the biggest sporting events (on your own tv set at home) is no longer free!
The broadcasting rights of all 64 matches have been awarded to ART. So, if you want to watch, you have to subscribe to one of those cable/satellite operators for a huge sum! Talk about rip-off!
In the age of capitalism (and what have you!), more players come into the picture!
Now you can watch the World Cup with friends (and strangers) at places such as Dubai Media City, clubs, hotel and pubs. Yes, it is not free, nevertheless it is cheaper than the Dhs.500 plus subscription if you want to watch it at home! Some places charge Dhs.10 per match, and some it will cost you the price of a drink.
This kind of arrangement is definetely the choice of the mass here in the UAE (not to mention the "black market", buy your new World Cup satellite decorder!).
My choice? Well, there are several generous Malaysians who have subscribed to the cable operator! Last night, 2 main venues were located - Ghusais in Dubai (Zainal's) and Sharjah @ Afza's place (not before spending 25 minutes scanning for free to air stations that might air the opening game - was glued to Jazeera for 10 minutes: they showed the outside view of the stadium for good 10 minutes!)
Santai environment - di rumah Zainal!
The business model? Want to watch? Well, come on! But bring some refreshments! So, last night the menu was: German and Costa Rica show with Doritos chips, KFC and sodas! Thanks Zainal & family for the generous gesture!
Orang memberi kita merasa!
