My posting di malaysian-uae today:
Abu Dhabi, UAE Astronomers in the UAE believed the announcement of the beginning of Ramadhan on Friday, September 22, was incorrect as the crescent moon was impossible to see on Friday, September 22 (UAE and Saudi Arabia among others started Ramadhan 1427H on Saturday, September 23).
Mohammad Shawkat Odeh of UAE Astronomical Society and Dr. Nidhal Gueeeoum of Sharjah American University maintain that Ramadhan should have been announced two days later (Sunday, September 24). Full story can be read here (Gulf News).
On September 19, myUAE Times ran a news article "Ramadhan 1427 Starts on 24th Sept?", quoting a source from European Council for Fatwa and Research:
"The
Sun will set in Makkah at 18:18 on Friday, while the moon's silver will
disappear at 18:15 on the same day.
"Accordingly, it would be impossible to sight the crescent in Makkah or European countries, making Sunday, September 24, the first day of Ramadan," it said.
The
Council, headed by prominent scholar
Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, meets twice a
year in Europe, with one session always held in Ireland .
The Islamic Crescent Observation Project (ICOP) has said that the first day of Ramadan will astronomically fall on September 24.
