The drastic change in Dubai's city look is really mouth watering! From sand to silicone. From dunes to towers! Quoting a Wired print version, Dubai will see a 4400% increase in the number of skyscrapers (from just 2 in 1999 to 90 in 2012!).
By 2012, Dubai will have 2 towers in the global's top 13 list (the iconic Burj Dubai at 2.313 feet and Burj Al Alam at 1,588 feet). Currently Taipei 101 is the world's tallest. Soon, the title will will go to Seoul. Then, to Dubai (Burj Dubai). And then, back to Seoul.
Chicago's Sears Tower (US' tallest building today) is not even in the top 15!
BTW, Seoul's Incheon Tower 1 & 2 (at 2,100 feet) will displace KLCC's Twin Towers (at 1,483 feet) as the world's tallest twin towers soon!
Current list (as of Dec 2007 - world's top 200) by Emporis can be viewed here (KLCC Towers @ number 2 and 3!). Dubai has 11 skyscrapers in the Top 200 list (against Malaysia 6, Singapore 6)
